What is a marathon?

A marathon is a test of endurance.  It is a test of commitment.  It is a challenge that pushes your body further, faster and harder than you could have ever imagined.

Marathons offer runners an opportunity to beat their personal records and to achieve personal challenges.  But what is truly your marathon?  What challenges you? Pushes you?  What takes you to the point of defeat and still you endure?

We are all running our own marathons, for some it may be 26.2 miles, other it’s a 100 mile ultra-marathon… for some of us it’s a 5K, and for others, is just making it around the block.  We don’t know what the person next to us is running for.  We don’t know what is the driving force behind the run.  Is it the pursuit to find a cure for cancer?  Is it the camaraderie of a team?  Is it a challenge to be healthier?  Is it a slow recovery from an accident? Or is it just a crazy gene that some people have to run insane amounts of miles?

Take a second as you step into the morning on Saturday, breathing in the cool mountain air at the foothills of the Wasatch.  Take a look around and feel the people.  Feel the energy of everyone around you.  Gather that energy.  Harness it is.  Because that is the power that is going to fuel you as you run, skate and ride the course.  We don’t know every ones challenges, but we do know that we all have them.  And we will all be there, ready to take them on.

The Salt Lake City Marathon is one of Salt Lake City’s signature events.  It invites people to run, ride and skate the course that winds through historic neighborhoods ends in the center of downtown to celebrate the glory of the run and the beauty of the Salt Lake City.
